Obituary of Norman V. Herms

Norman Vincent Herms "Wee" Norman V. Herms died peacefully at home in Mendham Township on Jan 23, 2012. He was 93. Born at home in the Whippany section of Hanover Township in 1918, Norman graduated from Morristown High School and attended Lafayette College where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. Norman spent his entire career at Gray Construction Company in Morristown, a family business begun by his gather in 1916. He served as President of the company from 1950 until his retirement in 1973. Along with his brother, Rudolph, Norman created several other successful ventures including Gray Equipment Company of Morristown, and Gray Supply Corp of Randolph. Norman was a resident of Mendham Township since 1966. He served as an Advisory Board Director of the Morristown Salvation Army, the Morris Plains Savings & Loan, and the National Iron Bank of Whippany. He had been a member and Past President of the Morristown Exchange Club, and a member of Mendham Golf & Tennis Club. He was predeceased by his wife Katherine Browne Herms, his brother Rudolph, and his sister Vivian H. Reilly. He is survived by his daughter Wendy Whalen and her husband Terry of Foster, Rhode Island, his son Norman Herms, Jr. and his wife Faith of Long Valley, five granddaughters, Dana, and Corey Whalen of Rhode Island, and Shaylan, Noelle, and Skylar Herms of Long Valley, and step-grandchildren Jonathan and Jenna Frisch of Boston. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The family held a private interment in Hilltop Cemetery. A Public Memorial Service will be held at Brookside Community Church in Brookside on Thursday Feb 2nd, 2012 at 11am.
