Dear Gail and family,
May I please send my sympathy to you on the death of your mother and express my regret that we never met her on the visit to Ireland referred to in her obituary. She seems to have been a very fine woman.
I write because I believe your father Emile’s mother, Maria McGlynn, was my mother’s aunt. Maria left the home place in Drumard, Dromod, County Leitrim in 1901, aged 19 years old, and went to New York. My mother says that her mother, Lizzie Kate, often wondered what had become of her sister. Her name was pronounced Mor-i-a. I see with interest from Ancestry.com that Maria named one her sons, Felix. Maria and Lizzie Kate had a maternal uncle named Felix Molaghan and Lizzie Kate also named a son Felix. My mother still owns Felix Molaghan’s land at Gortletteragh, and also the home place in Drumard although the house, a small famine type cottage, has not been lived in since her brother and sister, James and Margaret, died about 14 years ago. Details of the family can be found in the Irish census 1901. Their father was Patrick McGlynn and the address was House 5 Drumard McGeeraun (Rooskey, County Roscommon). The house is on the border between Roosky, County Roscommon and Dromod, County Leitrim.
If you come to Ireland in the future and would like to see where Maria came from, we’d be glad to show you. My mother is very elderly now and, except for arthritis in her knees and feet, is in good health with an excellent memory. She is a lovely lady, gentle and welcoming. She has one sister still alive who was called after Maria.
